‘Harvest For The Harbor’ Annual Fundraiser

Friday, November 11

The Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center is hosting its Seventh Annual fundraising event “Harvest for the Harbor” on Friday, November 11 at the PGICA, hosted by John Wright. This event allows us to bring together our community and provides the opportunity to celebrate our years work in environmental education and recreation!

As a fundraising event, we are currently seeking donations and sponsorships. Sponsoring this event provides us with the funds needed to further our mission of raising public awareness of our precious Florida environment. We would be thrilled to have more organizations as part of our support team.

If you are interested in making a donation, becoming a sponsor or contributing a silent auction item, please email somer@checflorida.org to discuss opportunities further. Or if you’d like to attend the event, purchase a ticket here https://www.checflorida.org/event-details/harvest-for-the-harbor

Voting Location Information

Some voting locations have been changed due to Hurricane Ian. For information about voting locations (early voting and Election Day) in Charlotte County, visit www.soecharlottecountyfl.gov.

Fresh Jersey Tomatoes 7th Annual Toy Drive, November 4-December 9

The Fresh Jersey Tomatoes (FJT’s), a group of women originally from New Jersey who now reside in Charlotte County, are holding their 7th Annual FJT’s Toy Drive for underprivileged children currently receiving services from Charlotte Behavioral Health Care (CBHC). The drive starts Nov. 4 and runs through Dec. 9. Last year we raised approximately 2,000 toys which was 1,000 more than the previous year. Click here for the list of places where you can drop off your donations.

Make Alternate Trick or Treat Plans

After much discussion, the City of Punta Gorda is encouraging residents to make alternate plans this Halloween. Hurricane Ian has left the City with a number of areas that no longer have functioning street lights. There are also many intersections missing traffic signals or stop signs, and an abundance of debris throughout neighborhoods. Streets will not be closed and the City Hall Annex will not be offering trick or treating. We look forward to welcoming residents and visitors back to a traditional Halloween experience in 2023.

Insurance Deductible Assistance Available Through SHIP

The State Housing Initiatives Partnership Disaster Assistance program provides assistance to low-income households following a disaster. In response to Hurricane Ian, the Charlotte County Disaster Assistance Program opened at 8 am, Tuesday, Oct. 25, and will remain open while funds are available.

SHIP disaster funds can be used to meet needs not covered by insurance and/or FEMA such as:

  • insurance deductibles for rehabilitation of homes covered under homeowners’ insurance
  • temporary or permanent relocation assistance
  • debris removal and/or interim repairs to prevent further damage when no charitable organizations are available to perform the work for free
  • other disaster-related unmet needs

Other sources of disaster funds and access to long term housing recovery programs may also be available.

Proof of U.S. citizenship (or legal alien status) and full-time and permanent Charlotte County residency is required. Subject property must be a primary residence. Income eligibility restrictions apply. For forms, contacts and more information, visit www.CharlotteCountyFL.gov/ship. For Hurricane Ian information, call the Charlotte County Emergency Operations Center from 8 am-5 pm, Monday-Friday at 941.833.4000 or 941.743.1320.

FWC Opens Displaced Vessel Hotline

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has established a hotline for reporting displaced vessels still on Florida state waters because of Hurricane Ian. The FWC and partner agencies are working with vessel owners to remove or relocate these vessels.

Report displaced or damaged vessels by calling the Hurricane Ian Vessel Hotline at 850-488-5600, 8 am-5 p., Monday-Friday. Callers will be asked to provide the vessel’s registration number, current location and detailed description.

Vessel owners are encouraged to hire a salvage company to recover their vessel to provide the safest method possible for the vessel and the environment. Owners of vessels that have become derelict have 45 days from the day the hurricane passed over the state to either remove their boats from waters of the state or bring it into a non-derelict condition.

Owners of displaced vessels who lack the resources to have their boat repaired, or if their vessel is determined to be beyond repair, may release ownership of their vessel. This process can be initiated by contacting the FWC through the Hurricane Ian Vessel Hotline at 850.488.5600 and requesting to turn over a displaced vessel. An FWC representative will then contact the owner to explain the waiver process and facilitate the potential turnover of ownership.
